The Pug is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, with a history in China stretching back over 2,000 years. The breed was developed in ancient China as a companion dog for the Chinese Imperial court, where it was kept as a prized possession of emperors and lived in luxury, guarded by soldiers. The Pug's Latin motto — multum in parvo, meaning "a lot in a little" — perfectly captures the breed's character: a maximum amount of personality, affection, and presence packed into a compact, sturdy body. The breed was brought to Europe by Dutch traders in the 16th century and quickly became a favorite of European royalty. A Pug reportedly saved the life of William I of Orange by alerting him to the approach of Spanish assassins in 1572, and the breed became the official dog of the House of Orange. Napoleon's wife Joséphine kept a Pug named Fortune, who reportedly bit Napoleon on their wedding night. The Pug's distinctive flat face, deep facial wrinkles, tightly curled tail, and velvety fawn or black coat are among the most recognizable features in the dog world. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1885. Our collection celebrates this ancient and beloved breed with original artwork across 3,000+ USA-made home décor and gift products.
